Welcome to Furman's Biology Department

Furman's biology program is one of the University's largest and busiest units. Typically there are around 50 seniors graduating each year and departmental staff include 13 fulltime faculty members, two laboratory coordinators, and and an administrative assistant.

The Department offers programs leading to the B.S. and B.A. degrees. Slightly more than half of our students have career plans in some area of human health. The others have a wide range of goals, including research in many areas of biology, teaching in secondary schools, work in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, veterinary medicine, and many others. If you wish to see a sampler of our alumnae and their current occupations, click here. A click here will send you to a very large website that describes the many occupations that can begin with a degree in biology.

We occupy a large portion of The Townes Center for Science (recently expanded and totally renovated). For a description of our equipment and physical facilities, click here.

The Department is especially known for two characteristics: providing many opportunities for "trying out" career activities in undergraduate research and internship positions, and being a friendly, supportive community of students and staff.

The Department's office telephone number is (864) 294-2084. Dialing that number will connect you with the Department's congenial and efficient administrative assistant, Ms. Sherry Craze. Telephone numbers and email addresses of individual faculty members are listed under Faculty Profiles.
