Purpose of the Course: 

The final course in the required language sequence, Spanish 21 is designed to improve the language skills of the student through grammar review, conversation, exposure to selected readings and the examination of Hispanic culture.

Course Objectives: 

1. To review major grammatical patterns.
2. To expand vocabulary and idiomatic structures. 
3. To develop further the four basic language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) 
4. To broaden the student's acquaintance with basic cultural patterns of Spain and Latin America.
5. To foster a positive attitude about the study of foreign language, literature and culture.

Class Attendance:

All students are expected to attend every class session. A student who has more than five unexcused absences during the term will be dropped with a grade of "F" in the course. It is the responsibility of the student to present evidence of illness (a note from the infirmary, for example) or any other type of absence which he or she believes the instructor may consider "excused." A freshman who exceeds eight absences or an upperclassman who exceeds fourteen absences for any reason (excused or unexcused) will be in violation of the maximum established by the university (p. 46 of the 2000-2001 Furman University Bulletin) and will be dropped with a grade of "F" as well.

Class Participation:

It means coming to class prepared, ready to speak, contribute, answer questions and participate in classroom activities in a positive way. In class you should try to speak only in Spanish and encourage your classmates to do so as well.

Assignment Information:

General information: The different chapters will be covered generally during the days indicated in the syllabus (Programa general), but I will assign specific pages, exercises and compositions daily. You must prepare the material and do the assignments before coming to class. Always have the exercises ready on a separate sheet of paper to hand in, since I will collect them regularly. Homework missed due to an excused absence may be turned in for credit within three days after returning to class. Be certain that you have the telephone numbers of several classmates so that you may obtain homework assignments when you miss class both for excused and unexcused absences. It is your responsibility to learn of possible changes in assignments as well as the instructor's notification concerning quizzes.

Cuaderno de ejercicios: You should do the exercises corresponding to each chapter as we are studying them. This is to provide you with further practice, but we will not correct these exercises in class. At the end of the "Cuaderno" there is an "Answer Key" so that you can self-correct the exercises after you have done them. I will ask to see the "Cuaderno" of several students once or twice a week to see that you are doing the exercises, and give you a plus, check or minus that will be part of the homework grade. For this purpose, it is important that you bring the "Cuaderno" to class every day. A student that does not do the exercises or does not have tha "Cuaderno" when I ask for it will receive a zero.

My Web Page: I have designed a Web Page for this course with exercises and extra material to accompany En contacto and the readings that we will do from Nuestro Mundo. I will give you specific instructions on the assignments in class.

Reading El País: During this semeter you will do several activities reading the Spanish newspaper El País through the Internet. You will be reading an authentic newspaper published in Spain which will give you the opportunity to practice your reading skills while increasing your vocabulary and putting the grammar you are learning in a cultural context.

Study Time:

Students generally are expected to spend twice as much time outside of class in preparation as they spend in class. The typical student in the Spanish 21 class, then, should plan to study two hours outside of class to prepare for daily lessons.

Tests:

Al tests will be announced and must be taken on the scheduled day. There will be no make up for quizzes; major tests can only be taken out of the scheduled time if student supplies a note from the appropiate Dean certifying an excused absence.
